The landscape of reward credit cards for renters and homeowners has undergone a significant shift with the launch of the Bilt Cards 2.0. Transitioning away from its previous partnership with Wells Fargo, Bilt has aligned with card servicer Cardless and issuer Column N.A. Bank to roll out a refreshed portfolio. This new lineup consists of three distinct tiers: the Bilt Blue Card, the Bilt Obsidian Card, and the Bilt Palladium Card. While these cards continue Bilt’s signature offering of earning points on housing payments without transaction fees, the underlying rewards architecture has grown considerably more complex.
The Bilt 2.0 Tiered Structure: Annual Fees and Welcome Offers
Bilt’s new portfolio caters to different spending levels, scaling from an entry-level zero-fee card to a premium luxury option:
- Bilt Blue Card: Features a $0 annual fee. It offers a welcome bonus of $100 of Bilt Cash upon approval. Note that Bilt Cash has an expiration policy: balances over $100 expire at the end of each calendar year.
- Bilt Obsidian Card: Priced at a $95 annual fee. It comes with a $200 Bilt Cash welcome offer, subject to the same calendar-year expiration rules.
- Bilt Palladium Card: The premium tier with a $495 annual fee. It features a robust welcome package: 50,000 Bilt Points and Gold Status after spending $4,000 on everyday purchases within the first 90 days, plus $300 of Bilt Cash.
Additionally, all three cards feature an introductory 10.00% APR on new purchases during the first 12 billing cycles, transitioning to a variable purchase APR of 26.74% – 34.74% thereafter.
Deciphering the Housing Payment Rewards Architecture
The most critical update in the Bilt 2.0 ecosystem is how users qualify for rewards on rent and mortgage payments. Unlike the straightforward rules of the original Bilt Mastercard (which required 5 transactions per billing cycle), cardholders must now choose between two distinct earning structures:
Option 1: Flexible Bilt Cash
Under this pathway, cards earn 4% back in Bilt Cash on everyday spending, in addition to standard category multipliers. Bilt Cash is a separate currency from Bilt Points. Cardholders must redeem Bilt Cash to “unlock” points on their monthly housing payments. The current exchange rate requires redeeming $30 of Bilt Cash to earn 1,000 Bilt Points on a housing transaction, capped at the actual payment amount. Consequently, unlocking points on a $2,000 monthly rent or mortgage payment requires redeeming $60 of Bilt Cash.
Option 2: Housing-Only Rewards
For those who prefer an automated process, this option bypasses Bilt Cash entirely. Instead, users earn Bilt Points directly on rent or mortgage payments (up to 1.25x), determined by their monthly non-housing spending ratio. The tier thresholds are as follows:
- 0.5x Points: Requires spending at least 25% of the monthly housing payment amount on everyday card purchases.
- 0.75x Points: Requires spending at least 50% of the housing payment amount on everyday purchases.
- 1x Points: Requires spending at least 75% of the housing payment amount on everyday purchases.
- 1.25x Points: Requires matching or exceeding the housing payment amount in monthly everyday spend.
If a cardholder fails to meet the minimum 25% spending threshold in a given month, the card defaults to a flat baseline of 250 points for that billing cycle’s housing payment.
Standard Category Multipliers and Redemption Options
Beyond housing, the cards offer specific point multipliers. The Bilt Blue Card provides 1x points on everyday purchases. The Bilt Obsidian Card steps up with 3x points on a choice of either dining or groceries (up to $25,000 per year) and 2x points on travel. The premium Bilt Palladium Card offers a flat 2x points on all everyday spending.
Redemption remains Bilt’s strongest value proposition. Bilt Points can be transferred to premier travel loyalty programs, including World of Hyatt and Air Canada Aeroplan. Points can also be redeemed for down payments on home purchases, student loans, or future rent.
